Q
Per your post on porn -
Can't it be argued that porn in and of itself is not a negative thing, but that the mainstream industry is the problem? What about independent porn produced by women / other marginalized groups? I wasn't sure if this was what you were talking about or if you meant that any form of porn is inherently degrading.
A

i am in support of sex-positive feminism (which entails the support of non-degrading pornography) and things of that sort. the mainstream porn industry is where my upset lies. i suppose i should have made that more clear.

Q
I just wanted to let you know that I agree with you on so many levels about the porn situation. I think porn is degrading to women and makes us look like toys to men. I think it's disgusting that girls will do that for money. It definitely makes guys think they are dominant over women, and it all starts at the age of what? 12? I don't understand why any girl would want to do that to herself.

I really enjoy your posts and hope there are more to come!

i do think it’s important to realize that many women don’t want to do it to themselves, they often feel it’s all they have. and the women that do enjoy it, i believe, probably only feel that way because being ‘sexy’ is what women are socialized to yearn for. to be accepted in that way by men is probably very gratifying for women who have truly been sucked into obeying the laws of patriarchy. anyway, i’m definitely no expert. these are just my rambles.

thanks so much! you’re sweet. i plan to write more often now that i’m not so busy.

to be queer is to be free.

queerness(n.) - oddity: a strange attitude or habit.

being queer identified encompasses much more than sexuality. being queer is allowing oneself the freedom to think, touch, say, act, dress, love and be however one wishes.

queer and proud.

honestly, fuck porn.

i am growing tired of the pro-porn/anti-porn debate. it’s depressing to me to have people within a progressive community arguing that the porn industry isn’t such a bad thing. i’ve been reading a lot of essays on the industry and the quotes themselves make me sick to my stomach. there is a porn site titled ‘trunked’ and this is one example of some of the things it says:

“it’s simple. throw a bitch in the trunk. if she doesn’t like it. she can get out. oh yeah, we’re going 55 mph…”

i am surprised over and over again with the incredible people who can still read/watch/hear something like this and continue to argue that it is freedom. this ‘freedom’ is protecting the the oppressor; not the oppressed. it would be silly for me to speak for every woman who has ever considered or followed through with having sex on camera for profit but i can say that many situations are similar. women aren’t ignorant to the fact that men are willing to pay to see them naked. they aren’t ignorant in that if they have one man performing anal sex, while another man is performing vaginal sex, while she is performing oral sex on yet another person… she will be rich. i could go on and on about how each case is heartbreakingly similar in that women have no where to go so they end up here. they end up victims to misogynistic sex acts. they end up victims to exploitation. they end up victims to rape.

pornography is a $97 billion industry. the people behind it are powerful. they have made many people believe that women are there solely by choice; that they simply love pornographic sex and that this is their career of choice among a wide range of other options. the majority of women in the industry are poor and have been victim to sexual abuse at some point in their lives. rich men are creating fraudulent contracts that ensure poor women money if they masturbate on camera, if they make out with a woman while a big, powerful man is ‘fucking them in the ass.’

the biggest issue i have with porn is the message it instills in its viewers. let’s be frank… most boys have visited at least one porn site by the age of 12. a young boy sees a man having sex with a woman, he doesn’t see a man and a woman having sex. he sees him force her mouth on his penis. he hears the demeaning language toward her. boys build up this idea that women are meant to be ‘fucked.’ they are slowly desensitized to the violence and when they begin having sex, they mimic what they know. the woman on camera liked it when he forced himself on her. pornography makes rape become a sexual turn-on and creates an idea that women enjoy being dominated. pornography instills the objectification of women, enforces patriarchy and perpetuates rape culture.

the porn industry is robbing every woman of her dignity and it breaks my fucking heart.

my apologies…

ok, here are my excuses for not posting recently: i’ve been doing research for upcoming posts, i have had little to no alone time, and school and animal rights stuff have been taking up a lot of my time. i promise i will post something of substance soon!

attention!

tomorrow is the first general meeting for s.a.l.c. (student animal liberation coalition). if you go to portland state (or not) and care about animals, please attend this meeting! we would really love more people to join.

[friday, october 8, food for thought cafe (basement of smith building), 7 pm, i’m baking cup cakes]

also, there is a counter protest against ‘precious children of portland’ on sunday. precious children of portland is an anti-choice group, whom you may have seen holding horrifying signs of fetuses outside planned parenthood on MLK. this protest marks the beginning of ‘anti-choice 40 days for life event’ so please come show your support for reproductive rights!

[sunday, october 10, meet on MLK on the east side of ne beech st., 2-4 pm, bring your own signs]

the best thing about fall: pumpkin muffins.

i was feeling a little sad last night and desperately needed to do something to keep my mind off things. baking seemed nice and i had yet to make something fall-ish. i can honestly say that i, for the first time, didn’t burn a single batch (luckily! you know how something like burning a batch of muffins can take a bad mood and make it dangerous?) so far i’ve had seven; two of which were eaten in a pathetic bubble bath full of self pity. needless to say, i’m feeling much better now that my apartment smells like cinnamon and i have eaten my feelings in muffins.
for those of whom would like the recipe…
3 tablespoons ground flaxseed
1/2 cup water
2 cups granulated sugar
1 1/2 cups unsweetened applesauce
1 can pumpkin puree
3 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon cloves (ground)
1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (ground)
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
[preheat oven to 350 degrees, bake for 20 minutes]

an explanation for the title of my blog:

i really love honeybees. i mean, the whole queen bee thing is cool (finally, a woman running the show!) and they’re vegan. honeybee colonies, unlike other bee colonies, are perennial. so, they don’t have the ‘hit it and quit it’ mentality. also, ‘me and the bees’ is the title to a song by the softies. anyway, don’t eat honey.

why feminists should be vegan:
i remember hearing the term ‘ecofeminist’ a few years ago. it took me some time to realize the parallelism between environmentalism and feminism but once it clicked, it stuck with me forever. the exploitation of the earth and the exploitation of women are considerably related. i remember reading a book that used the idea of “earth as woman” to create an image for ecofeminism. if i close my eyes and visualize the crimes that are committed to the earth (i.e. deforestation, oil drilling, pollution, industrialized farming, freeways, etc.), i can immediately see the connection between the subordination of women an the degradation of the earth (meaning the real, physical earth along with those that live and depend on it).
feminism is a loose term since the third wave hit but, to me, it incorporates a handful of different things. first, being feminist means agreeing with equality of all sexes (including transgender people, intersex people, people who don’t identify with the sex that ‘matches’ their genitalia, etc.) secondly, it means dropping all expectations of gender roles. thirdly, it is understanding, empathizing, and helping other things that are oppressed just as women are.  i feel that it only makes sense for a self identified feminist to look at the exploitation of animals and realize the hypocrisy in supporting that industry.
how can a feminist not explore the intersectionality between sexism and speciesism? let’s take animal testing for example. an animal is held captive, used, beaten, denied a decent quality of life for the ‘betterment’ of [man]kind (i.e. food, clothing, products). in our culture, a woman is seen as something to aid a man. she is for sex. she is to stay confined to the home. she is for raising children. a woman and an animal can both be seen as objects used to achieve something; animals-food, women-sex and clean laundry.
this turned into a bit of a ramble.

why, hello there.

this is my first official post on tumblr. i suppose i wanted to write a little bit about myself and why i’m putting together a vegan feminist blog.

well, my name is rylee. i currently live in portland, oregon. i’m going to school to study elementary education, women’s studies and spanish. i’m vegan and feminist, and much too proud of it. i really love crafting, baking, reading, sleeping, playing board games, floristry, activism, being sober, collecting, gift wrap, sewing, d.i.y. culture and adventuring.

i am writing this blog mostly for myself. i think i’m awful at getting my thoughts out in real life so i figured writing them down would be a good idea. i wanted to put something together that represented myself. hopefully it will be pleasant for others to read as well!

i suppose that’s all for now.
