why feminists should be vegan:
i remember hearing the term ‘ecofeminist’ a few years ago. it took me some time to realize the parallelism between environmentalism and feminism but once it clicked, it stuck with me forever. the exploitation of the earth and the exploitation of women are considerably related. i remember reading a book that used the idea of “earth as woman” to create an image for ecofeminism. if i close my eyes and visualize the crimes that are committed to the earth (i.e. deforestation, oil drilling, pollution, industrialized farming, freeways, etc.), i can immediately see the connection between the subordination of women an the degradation of the earth (meaning the real, physical earth along with those that live and depend on it).
feminism is a loose term since the third wave hit but, to me, it incorporates a handful of different things. first, being feminist means agreeing with equality of all sexes (including transgender people, intersex people, people who don’t identify with the sex that ‘matches’ their genitalia, etc.) secondly, it means dropping all expectations of gender roles. thirdly, it is understanding, empathizing, and helping other things that are oppressed just as women are. i feel that it only makes sense for a self identified feminist to look at the exploitation of animals and realize the hypocrisy in supporting that industry.
how can a feminist not explore the intersectionality between sexism and speciesism? let’s take animal testing for example. an animal is held captive, used, beaten, denied a decent quality of life for the ‘betterment’ of [man]kind (i.e. food, clothing, products). in our culture, a woman is seen as something to aid a man. she is for sex. she is to stay confined to the home. she is for raising children. a woman and an animal can both be seen as objects used to achieve something; animals-food, women-sex and clean laundry.
this turned into a bit of a ramble.
